Let's Grow Together
Why Sow Native Flower Seeds in Winter?
If you’re looking to grow a vibrant, pollinator-friendly garden, winter is actually your best friend. While the ground may be frozen, nature is busy preparing for spring—and you can help it along right from your backyard.
The Magic of "Cold Stratification"
Most New Jersey native seeds aren’t ready to sprout the moment they hit the ground. They possess a natural "biological clock" that requires cold stratification—a specific period of cold, moist conditions—to break their dormancy.
By sowing in November thru February you are perfectly mimicking nature's cycle. This ensures that when the soil warms up, your seeds are primed and ready to germinate effectively.
Light, Wind, and Soil
Many of our local native seeds are remarkably small. In the wild, these seeds are often carried by the wind and settle on the surface of the soil. Because of their size, they require little to no soil covering to sprout; they simply need direct contact with the earth and a bit of winter sun to kickstart their growth in the spring.

Visit Our Free Seed Library
Ready to start your winter sowing garden? Visit the Free Seed Binder at the Evesham Library reference desk to pick up your native flower seeds!
Our mission is simple: Take, Grow, and Share. We encourage you to start these seeds in your own yard and share the bounty—and the knowledge—with your neighbors and friends.
What’s in the Binder?
We are currently offering over 20 varieties of native seeds, made possible through our wonderful partnerships with Chartwell Gardens and the Southwest Chapter of the Native Plant Society of NJ.
Pro Tip: Because our binder space is limited, our selection rotates regularly based on the season. If you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to check back often!
